Down the rabbit hole

New Moon in Gemini

Gemini season has begun, bringing with it fresh winds to help lift us up and explore new ideas, new territories. And it’s not just the Sun in Gemini right now, but also Mercury, the North Node, Vesta and a retrograding Venus which are fuelling the zodiac’s social-butterfly vibes. We are all set for a month of asking questions, discovering new things and being as mobile as the rules will let us be.

A quick word on Gemini. It is ruled by Mercury, the winged messenger and is represented by the twins, a nod to the duality of this mutable sign which can chop and change at will.

Gemini likes to be everywhere at once and learn as much as it can about all the things. Chatty and inquisitive, it’s the curious cat always getting its nose into everything.

During non-social distancing times, Gemini season typically means lots of socialising, parties and generally getting out and about as much as possible. So the question now is how can we fulfill these needs during a time when we’re told to stay in our homes? With restrictions lifting in some countries, it’s like we are starting to dip our toes into the social waters 5–10 visitors at a time, but is that enough?

It makes me think of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Alice chased a white rabbit down a hole and ended up in a strange dream world where everything was turned upside down. Certainly, the way the world is right now feels like a dream, or at the very least that strange time between Christmas and New Year when you have no idea what day it is.

Who’s to say what is ‘normal’ anymore. Perhaps we need to just learn to navigate this dream and Gemini is here with its curious mind, flexible nature and adaptability to help us do just that.

'And what is the use of a book,' thought Alice, 'without pictures or conversation?'

Retrograding Saturn over in fellow air-sign Aquarius is trine this New Moon, lending a structure and focus to this reset.

Saturn wants us to do things properly—it will make you go back over your theoretical book and make sure you have an appropriate amount of pictures and conversation in it before it will be printed. This is a time of reviewing and revising, assessing how we’ve done as a collective to stop the spread of COVID-19 and the next steps we can take.

Saturn teaches us patience, tenacity and the benefits of playing the long game. A little more caution now can reap great benefits in the future.

Now that we’ve had a couple of months to adjust to different ways of living and working, we can use this energy to help fuel our new ideas of what we want our day-to-day lives to be like in the future.

Despite most people getting comfortable with not commuting and wearing hoodies and ugg boots all day long, Gemini season will see us coming out a bit more and venturing into the office, craving more social interactions and a chance to show off all the new clothes we bought online during isolation. Once we move into Cancer season—that of the home and hearth—I see us wanting to spend more time at home again, creating another shift where we will be bringing things into more balance. Use this time to work out what that balance looks like for you.

'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!

Venus, the ruler of relationships, values, self-worth and money went retrograde in Gemini on May 13. So here we are, giving our personal values a good going-through and exploring new ways of learning, socialising and connecting to our neighbourhoods and relationships.

During a Venus retrograde, past romances can make their way into your thoughts for you to review what worked and what didn’t. Sometimes an ex will get back in touch. Relationships might suddenly end, or quickly go to the next level.

Your old rules and beliefs about how a relationship should develop are about to be challenged. Mercury will be conjunct Venus at this New Moon. Expect new conversations, new ideas, new areas of your relationship to change and open up.

A relationship is about two people connecting with each other. I’ve said before how it’s the balance between the We and the Me. Venus is also asking you to explore your relationship with yourself—this is something that we all must do, so that when we connect with people whether they are friends, family, colleagues or a romantic partner, we meet them from a place where we know who we are. Take yourself out on a little date—wine and dine yourself as best you can—and enjoy your own company.

Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

The nodes also recently changed signs from 18 months in Cancer/Capricorn to Gemini/Sagittarius. Eclipses over the next 18 months will be highlighting these areas of your chart, pulling us away from the dogmatic beliefs we have been holding onto (Sag) and asking us to get curious with new ideas (Gemini). Sagittarius is depth, Gemini is breadth.

So this transit is an opportunity to collect new thoughts the way you would collect shells on the beach: look for ones that seem interesting to you and only keep the ones that aren’t broken.

Vesta, the keeper of the internal flame, is also in Gemini, so if you feel like you have lost your sparkle, now is the time to get it back. What lights you up? What thrills you? How are you keeping your light alive in new ways?

Possibilities which once seemed out of reach can be taken off the shelf, dusted off and reassessed. For we’ve seen the potential of what can be. What are six impossible things that you want to do with your life in the next 18 months? Write them down. Feel into them. Believe in them.

It would have made a dreadfully ugly child; but it makes rather a handsome pig.

Jupiter, the planet that keeps us buoyant and optimistic also recently went retrograde. This particular transit is asking us to direct the energy within, to find the optimism and expansion internally. What jewels can you find inside yourself? What negatives can you reframe and turn into a positive? Basically, how can you create more freedom and expansion for yourself within the current state of play?

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

COVID isolation time is a bit like dog years.

Even though it has only been a couple of months since social distancing was brought in across many countries, it feels like a lot longer.

Things are bound to get weirder. We don’t know what lies ahead, but what we all need to do is put on our explorer hats and get curious. Curious about our lives, our relationships and what we want the world to be like for all of us. The Coronavirus has changed us all in different ways and this Gemini season is the perfect opportunity to discover who you are now.
