How do you want to feel?

Why deciding how you want to feel first helps you work out what you want to do.



There are times when things can seem a little murky. You don't really feel like everything is as good as it could be, and yet, you have no idea what you could do to make everything feel better.


Often we don’t have answers to the 'what should I do?' question because our head is dominating our heart. The head is a very good tool that we have, but sometimes it can get tired and confused by all the thinking, thinking, thinking. And our heart is just sitting there, waiting for us to hear it. Sadly, we humans can forget to listen to our hearts (to paraphrase Roxette).  


The head and the heart complement each other. Once you work through the process of opening up your heart to what is most important to you, your head can then step in and have a clear idea of how you are going to achieve it.

For me, the best way to tap into how I want to feel is by writing. I find a quiet space, close my eyes, take some deep breaths, then start writing uncensored in my journal. Sometimes I use a starter such as 'What is missing from my life right now is ... ' or 'I am craving ... ' After a few minutes, I read back over my writing and find the common theme or feeling. This then gives me direction. 


When I did this exercise at the start of the year, I found my key theme was 'Strong'. I then started to think about how I could incorporate this feeling into different areas of my life—a strong body and mind, solid relationships, financial strength etc.


The feeling then fuelled my actions and plans (eg. want to feel physically strong, commit to an exercise plan). It gave me a touchstone when I needed to check-in with myself: Will this help me feel strong? Yes—continue as is; No—course-correct. 


Even if the big vision still alludes you, working towards feeling the way you want to feel will always lead you in the right direction.
